What Happens When... My student is failing a class?
As the semester moves forward, students have an increasingly clearer picture of their academic standing in each of their courses. If your student is facing the possibility that it may be mathematically impossible for them to earn a passing grade in a course(s), it is time to discuss the pros and cons of dropping a class.
Pros:
- A grade of “W” on the transcript does not impact GPA.
- Dropping one class, may allow time and effort to be focused on remaining courses, improving those grades.
Cons:
- A dropped course does not earn credit.
- Some courses are prerequisites for other courses and dropping may interfere with curriculum pacing.
April 18 is the last day to drop a Spring 2025 course to avoid an undesired grade. Dropping a course is a decision to be considered closely. There may be financial implications to reducing the number of credits a student completes in a semester. Students should check with University Scholarships, University Financial Aid, and the Veteran’s Resource Center before reducing their course load if they are currently working with any of these offices.
