Student Apartments
Your student just moved in, so why are they already talking about where to live next year? Unfortunately, in Auburn, the local custom is for students to select housing for the following year in the current year. That means that many of your students are talking now about where they want to move to in August 2025.

As you navigate these conversations with your student, here are a few things to consider.

Lease type
When selecting a facility, consider if you want a per-unit or a per-individual lease.

Individual Lease - The benefit of an individual lease is that your student would only be responsible for their individual lease. If their roommate leaves Auburn, your student would not be responsible for the full lease amount, but the leasing office can fill that space with another person.

Unit Lease – The benefit of a unit lease is that your student and their co-lessees choose to live together so they know exactly who will be there. In other words, the leasing office will not place an unknown person in the space, but your student will be responsible for paying the unpaid rent.

Facility Reputations
When selecting a facility, your student will likely care about the location and amenities at the site. Another item to consider is the reputation of the facility. Knowing if the leasing company has a track record of quickly taking care of maintenance and safety issues can be very helpful. The Better Business Bureau site for Auburn, AL is a great place to start. It’s also good for you or your student to speak to people who previously lived at that property.

Transportation
While we think of Auburn as a lovely village, it is in rural Alabama, where vehicles are frequently needed to travel to school, shopping, etc. If your student does not have a car, consider what transportation is available from that location. Tiger Transit provides transportation to campus typically on Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. Students who travel to work, campus, activities, etc., after hours will need to make alternate arrangements for travel.

Housing Information
To help your student make an informed decision, University Housing offers a Student Housing Locator website and housing fairs. The housing fairs will be at the Melton Student Center main lobby on Thursday, October 3 and Wednesday, November 13 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
